I’ve written several reviews of gummy candies where I’ve stated that I wish the flavours would match the design a little better. I can remember recently writing about some pumpkin shaped gummies that where orange flavoured. I remember saying how interesting it might be to have pumpkin flavoured gummies, instead of orange. I also remember saying that I might not like the pumpkin flavour, but I would give them a great deal of respect for going out on the ledge for the authenticity. Well it appears I’ve met the gummy that fills this mark.
These gummies are corn shaped, and to make it just right, they are also corn flavoured. I don’t think anyone has been asking for corn flavoured gummies before, but here we are. I will admit that the flavour is a little weird, but once you get past the weirdness, it’s actually pretty tasty. Corn is a flavour that surprisingly works well in the sweets world. There are actually several treats that are corn flavoured, and I’ve had corn ice cream in the past as well. From a western standpoint, if you think about these in the same context as some of the sweet corn cereals out there, it’s not that weird.
While the concept of a corn flavoured gummy is a little weird, eventually your brain makes sense of it and it’s not that bad. The odd thing I couldn’t get over with this candy is the gummy texture. I was almost going to call this candy taffy, instead of a gummy. It’s really in the middle between a taffy and a gummy, but I figured because of its odd shape I would lean more towards gummy. It’s a little too stretchy and soft to make it a normal taffy, but too stretchy to work as a gummy. It’s really a minor problem since you spend the first few chews just trying to figure out if you like the corn flavour before the texture effects you.
I’m not sure I could eat a whole bag of these, but I really enjoyed eating the few that I got. I’m sure some people might not be able to make a corn flavoured gummy work in their minds, but the flavour is pretty authentic, and it’s truly not revolting.
