Isher Chewing Candy "Soda Flavor"

Orion

It takes about 1 second to realize that this candy is not what you’re expecting. I thought the drawing on the front of the package was just some kind of wacky design, then after that approximately 1 second I realized that it was a warning that this candy was very sour. That’s the time it takes to bite through the soft chewy (blue soda) flavour to a pocket of very intense sour powder. I like a good sour candy, and this is a fairly sour treat.

While the centre provides a sour pop, the chewy blue shell provides the texture and flavour. The texture is a nice soft pellet that’s easy to chew. The flavour is that of a blue soda, most notably ramune soda. If you’re not familiar with ramune soda, it’s a Japanese drink that’s often blue and has a weird fruity flavour. The original reason ramune soda got on my radar is because it often comes in a bottle that is sealed with a marble. I think this unique bottle design made this drink so popular that it’s often available now without the bottle. It’s also a fairly popular flavour for other treats because it’s very fake, and I feel like it’s easy to reproduce.

It’s a little odd because this candy really does do many things right, but I’m still not a huge fan. My first problem is that the sour really dominates once you get to the centre of this chewy candy. It almost completely wipes out the fruity flavour of the ramune soda. I like sour a treat, but I love sour treats when the sour works with the flavour and not against it. My other problem with this candy is the flavour choice. I like drinking ramune soda, but I like the interesting design of the bottle. I can’t say that I love the flavour of ramune soda as it just tastes like weird, ultra fake fruit. I understand that some people really love this stuff, but I don’t get the gimmick without the cool bottle.
