This treat must have been inspired from the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In the book the Three Course Dinner Chewing Gum allowed you to chew one piece of gum and taste and entire meal one part at a time. While they’re still trying to master gum that changes flavour properly, Juicy Fruit is going for gum that tastes like other foods. I can’t say this is a courageous step in the evolution of gum, a chicken with gravy, or turkey pot pie flavoured gum would be courageous, but this is a step in the right direction.
It’s a step in the right direction, as opposed to the wrong direction, because it kind of works. I had three different gums to choose from, Orange Creme Pop, Strawberry Short Cake, and Apple Pie. I chose apple pie because I thought it would be the hardest to transfer into a gum flavour. I am also generally not a fan of apple flavoured treats, so the odds were stacked up against this gum.
What surprised me most of all when I bit into this gum is how much it tasted like apple pie. For the first few chews I was really convinced. After a few more chews the intensity of the apple pie flavour seemed to go away, but it still had a pretty good taste. I’m not sure if I became less convinced of the apple pieness of this gum because my brain caught up to my taste buds and realized that the texture was wrong, or because certain aspects of the flavour might die down a little after a few chews.
I’m not sure if apple pie gum will ever outsell mint or other fruit gums, but it’s a fun step into a new area. I hope Juicy Fruit and other gum companies continue this journey.
