For those familiar with European shopping, you’ll know that these are just a generic brand of candy from the Carrefour grocery store. That doesn’t mean they’re going to be bad, in fact I’ve had some pretty great treats from Carrefour before, it just means that there’s likely a fancier version of this treat available as well. The fancy version of this treat I would say is Werther’s Original. While these are very similar, they’re certainly not exactly the same.

The first difference you’ll notice is that these are wrapped in clear cellophane, and not fancy packages. For some reason the people at Werther’s like to really go nuts with packaging. I’m not against it really, but looking at this simply packaged version does sell the creamy candy very well. Another visual difference between these and Werther’s is the size and shape. These seem a little smaller than Werther’s and frankly the shape seems a little less detailed and elegant. While you could argue that all these differences make this candy look cheaper, I would argue that a great deal of these difference don’t really mean that much.

I think the most important part is the taste and texture. Unfortunately I will say that these do slip a little bit behind Werther’s in that area as well. I found the caramel flavour to be weaker and the texture was a little less creamy. It’s unfortunate because I feel like if Carrefour just kept up the taste and texture quality, I would have been really surprised and delighted with these.

While these don’t stand up to Werther’s, they’re still pretty good. I’ll be honest, I don’t know how much these cost, but I imagine they’re probably a lot less expensive than Werther’s as well. I was certainly happy to eat these and I’ve got a few leftover that I’ll be happy to munch later on.
