I’m going to start off this review with the one negative thing, and only because it’s the first thing you see on the package when you buy these Hershey’s Kisses. I don’t think the name really suits the candy. First and foremost there is nothing cake like about these at all. I don’t think it would be possible to make these cake like and keep them Hershey’s Kisses either. Secondly I feel like the centre is slightly the wrong consistency to be a lava cake. To me a lava cake oozes out the second you bite into it. This is a gooey centre, but it doesn’t really ooze the same way. If I had my way, I would call these Hershey’s Kisses Ooey Gooey Dark Chocolate. It’s a much longer name, but it describes these very well.
This takes me to all the good stuff I have to say about these Hershey’s Kisses, and it’s a lot. First of all the use of dark chocolate is perfect. In fact it makes me wonder how much better other Hershey’s Kisses would be if they just used dark chocolate. There’s something about the strong bitter flavour that makes these small bite sized candies a little more satisfying. The chocolate is also a really nice balance to the slightly sweeter gooey centre.
The gooey centre is pretty special too. While it may not ooze the same way as a lava cake, it works so well in this context. In fact, if these did ooze like a lava cake, I think they would have been far too messy. The gooey centre is more like a chocolate caramel centre than a molten lava cake centre. This is a very good thing not only because it’s neater, but it’s very satisfying when blended with the dark chocolate.
I ate a few of these and all I could think about was how much they were nothing like a lava cake. Then I ate a few more and realized how much I wanted to eat even more of these. I have mixed feelings about Hershey’s Kisses. Sometimes they disappoint, but times like this I feel like they’re the perfect gift to tell someone how much you care.
