Kit Kat "Pineapple Tart Flavour"

Nestlé

I think calling this a “pineapple tart flavoured” Kit Kat is a bit of a misnomer. The pineapple part is dead on, it kind of tastes like a pineapple Life Savers candy. Similar to the Life Savers, it’s not the most authentic of pineapple flavours, but it’s not bad. There’s even a slight sour aftertaste with this Kit Kat that gives it just a little more authenticity. As far as calling this a pineapple Kit Kat bar I would have no problem at all.

The problem comes from the word “tart” in the name. The specific tart it’s supposed to be representing isn’t your classic western round tart, but a roll of pastry dough that encircles a glob of pineapple filling. It’s a common treat in Asian countries and very popular during Chinese New Year. The thing this Asian tart (and even the western counterparts) has is a nice buttery flavour to balance out the acidity of the pineapple. Since this pineapple flavoured bar has the acidity, without having the butter flavour it’s not balanced like the original pastry.

I would call this a unique and tasty Kit Kat bar, but it’s not really a success. It really needs something else to give it a buttery (pastry) flavour. I imagine that the folks at Nestlé thought that the wafers could handle this task, but they just don’t have a strong enough or buttery flavour. It’s worth noting that I did enjoy the yellow and orange decorative layer of chocolate as well, so a few more points for novelty I guess.
