Before I start this Kit Kat review I want to set a few things straight. Not all Kit Kat bars are the same and not all are equal. I’m also just talking about the regular milk chocolate Kit Kat bars, we can ignore all the different variety and flavours of Kit Kat for this argument. Some milk chocolate (plain) Kit Kat bars are better than others depending on when you buy them. While many are very similar, some are very different. The American Kit Kat bar is actually the most unique as it’s not even made by Nestle. Kit Kat bars in the USA are actually made by Hershey’s. While I’ll argue that Kit Kat bars are different all over the world, and some are better than others, I will also argue that even the worst Kit Kat is a Kit Kat and still very yummy.
Speaking of the worst Kit Kat… I think to say that this is the worst milk chocolate Kit Kat bar is a little unfair, as I said before even the worst is still a great bar. I’ll try and avoid using words like “worst” for this review. Instead I’ll say that this bar is very wafer forward. When you bite into this Kit Kat bar the balance seems to go slightly towards the flavour of the wafer cookie and the filling in the wafer cookie. The chocolate feels like it’s not as pronounced as the cookie, or not even balanced. Don’t get me wrong, there most certainly is a chocolate component, but it just feels like the cookie is a little more powerful with this bar.
There are many arguments one could have as to why this happens, many would argue that “American chocolate is generally not that high quality”. I don’t want to go into that too much as it’s a generalization, however culturally I kind of agree for the most part. From people I’ve talked to in the candy manufacturing business and my own taste tests I’ve generally found that American chocolate is more often of lesser quality than chocolate found in other parts of the world. This isn’t always the case, as there are some great American chocolatiers out there, but when it comes to mass-produced chocolate it’s often behind other parts of the world.
As I said before even the worst milk chocolate Kit Kat is still a Kit Kat, so if you come across this bar and you have a Kit Kat craving, go for it. I would just suggest that if you have the option to go for a Japanese or British milk chocolate Kit Kat you might want to think about your choice first.
