Kool-Aid Gum "Cherry"

Hilco

This gum completely makes sense, but that doesn’t make it an excellent gum. It makes sense because there are two things that you need to make a gum, flavour and chewiness. This candy has both of those, at least at first. With gum you can either go with an original flavour, or try and simulate something that isn’t already a gum. Often gums will try and simulate flavours of things that aren’t normally gum, it’s often fruit, but it can also be desserts or in this case drinks. A drink like Kool-Aid is a really good choice of drink to try and copy in gum form because the flavour is nostalgic, but also very fake.

I say fake in a good way, I believe that most foods have a real flavour and a fake flavour. Sometimes these fake flavours taste nothing like the real flavour at all, but through nostalgia and constant advertising, eventually your brain believes that cherry flavoured Kool-Aid is actually cherry, even though it doesn’t taste like real cherries at all. The good thing about fake flavours is they’re easily transferable to other foods, like gum. So this is all to say that this gum tastes exactly like cherry Kool-Aid, and it appears to be the point.

As an interesting side note, I reviewed this Cherry Kool-Aid gum in the winter while taking a walk outside. I say this is interesting because I’m pretty sure that this is the only way to enjoy the flavour of cherry Kool-Aid outside in the winter. I feel like a glass a Kool-Aid just wouldn’t be as nice.

I’m going to end with the thing I did not like about this gum at all, and that’s the staying power. Both the flavour and the texture managed to hang on for about 7 minutes. This is certainly at the low end when it comes to chewing gum. I was disappointed because I feel like I could slowly sip a tall glass of Kool-Aid for much longer, and it wouldn’t feel like I was chewing a piece of rubber at the end.
