Lay's "Bar-B-Q"

Fritos-Lay

Of all the classic flavours of potato chips out there, Bar-B-Q is probably least favourite. Bar-B-Q has been around for as long as I can remember, so I’ve tried a few varieties, but I still have yet to try one that I feel like I would want to try again. Bar-B-Q chips are the only classic chip that if offered, I’d likely reject. Don’t get me wrong, there are worse chips out there in my mind. You can check out some of my past reviews and see some really awful flavours of potato chips (I’m looking at you cool melon). The thing about these chips is that they’re not disliked by many other people. There’s a good chance that you or I will come across these at a party or even more ironically a barbecue.

So what I’m trying to say is that I don’t like these chips very much, but a lot of people do. People have apparently been enjoying Bar-B-Q flavoured potato chips for decades, and continue to enjoy them. Allison has even admitted that they’re in her top 5 of chip flavours. I guess what this means is how much you like these chips depends on you. One could say that about many or all of the things I’ve ever reviewed, but I feel like this might be a little different. For some reason I feel like I might be in the minority this time. I feel like if I was to poll people and ask them their top 5 flavours of potato chips, most would have Bar-B-Q in that list, maybe even this brand. So I guess what I’m saying is, don’t really trust this review, get a bag of these chips and try them for yourself.

As for these particular Bar-B-Q flavoured chips, one thing that might turn people off is the complete lack of spice. They basically taste like a really sweet ketchup with a slight spiced flavour, with no heat at all. I’m not a huge fan of spicy food, so I was happy about that, but I feel like people who do like barbecue things would probably appreciate a little heat. There is a slight barbecue sauce flavour to these, but I feel like it might go a little too sweet for people who like barbecue food.

In conclusion, I feel like I’m not a good judge of barbecue flavoured chips, but I also feel like a little spice is needed to make these more authentic.
