Magic Foot "Variety"

MJ

There’s a lot I need to break down about this treat. As candies go this is kind of a Candy Critic’s dream, but not because it’s the best candy I’ve ever eaten. Let me get this out of the way, this is at best an average candy, and as far as understanding what’s going on it’s a total disaster. The reason why this is a Candy Critic’s dream is there is plenty to unpack with this candy, and that means this review is going to be very easy to write.

I’ll start by saying that this candy is from South East Asia, and while I wasn’t able to read every word on the package, most of the important parts are in English or are visually represented (this will make more sense later). I’ve been confused by candy in the past because I either couldn’t read the package, or I was missing some kind of cultural reference that I didn’t grow up with. I think it’s fair to say that I understand how to eat this candy, what to expect with most of this candy, and there really isn’t anything I’m “missing” from a cultural standpoint. Unless at some point in South East Asia there was some kind of kids cartoon show that involved fruit flavoured feet.

Speaking of fruit flavours, this is my first issue with this candy. I was trying to figure out exactly what flavour this candy was going to be. Judging by the picture I thought predominantly grape with other possible fruit flavours. At the top of the package it lists several other fruits including orange, strawberry, lemon, grape and pineapple. Knowing that this is was going to be a lollipop and assuming it had some kind of powder to dip into, I thought either it was a grape lollipop with a fruity powder, or it was a randomly fruity flavoured lollipop with a random fruity powder. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, my lollipop was cola flavoured... yup, I’m just as confused as you. The powder had no flavour at all, which brings me to the second problem.

The lack of flavour in the powder wasn’t the only problem with the powder. It also wasn’t sour, or didn’t add a texture (like a popping candy or crunchy sugar), it was just sweet. With all of these fruity features on the package, I got a cola flavoured lollipop with a bunch of powdered sugar.

Honestly I bought this treat because I thought the idea of foot themed candy was kind of weird. I figured that it would just be some kind of fruit flavoured treat shaped like a foot. I’m not sure why I thought this was a good idea, but sometimes weird just attracts me. As it turns out this weirdly themed candy got even weirder the more I ate it. It was an okay cola flavoured lollipop, but I feel like I deserved so much more based on the package.
