I have real mixed feelings about these Mike and Ikes. I like them because they’re really sour, and the grape and orange flavour is pretty good too. I’m not a big fan of the fake watermelon flavour, but I’ve had worse fake watermelon in my life, so it’s not that bad. The weird thing about these is the fact that they’re advertised as a Halloween candy, but other than the package I can’t find anything really that scary about them. The flavours aren’t really fall related either.
Is sour really a spooky or scary flavour? That’s the real question when we look at the candy itself. They seem to imply it a few times on the package, but in reality I’m not sure just being sour is reason enough to call a candy spooky or scary. “Extreme” is a better way to describe something that’s really sour, and these might fall into the category of extreme Mike and Ikes. I’m just not sure they’re really Halloween themed, other than the box.
The only thing I could truly connect might be the colour of these Mike and Ikes. Orange is certainly a Halloween colour, green is certainly creepy and for some reason purple works in the goth world. So one could argue that the colours of these Mike and Ikes is on theme, but is that enough to say they’re a Halloween treat?
The problem is one I’ve seen a few times in the candy world, it’s a fine candy, sour, tasty enough, even the texture is nice and chewy, but the theme is just not as clear. As you’ll see, taste and texture are a high enough mark, but I’m going to have to take a few points off of novelty. If it wasn’t advertised as a Halloween treat, it might have actually ranked better.
