I want to start this review by saying one thing, more candies should offer a black current variety. I think as far as fruit flavours go, black current is really under represented in the candy industry. Even more interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad black current candy. Sure there aren’t too many of them out there, but the few that I’ve tried were all pretty good. These strange little round balls are no exception, they taste pretty good.
I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into with these Millions. My first inclination was that they would be similar to nerds or possibly ice cream sprinkles. Not that either of these texture options would have been bad, but I was pleasantly surprised by how different they are, and how much I like what they turned into. These little round balls are actually very chewy. If I was to describe them using common candy terms, I would say they’re like a Nerds candy crossed over with a jelly bean. Each ball has an extremely thin crunchy coating with a soft chew centre. After a few chews they kind of merge into a ball of chewiness, but since it’s a wonderful black current flavour, I didn’t mind at all.
The one thing I don’t get about these is the name. My only guess is they’re called millions because notionally you could eat a million of them, due to their small size. It could also be that they’re kind of related to what British folks call sprinkles (for ice cream), hundreds and thousands. Much like the name of these, I’m nor certain of how sprinkles got this name other than the fact that one can eat a lot of them at once.
After a little research, I’ve learned that Million makes more flavours, and if I ever come across them I’ll probably give them a try. I’m glad I tried these black current ones first though, because it’s a flavour that just always does well and a good introduction to this treat.
