Monster Soft Candy "Salty Lemon"

Wischi

I could be mistaken, but this might be the first time I’ve ever seen or tasted salted gummy candies. When I saw the flavour I have to admit that I was pretty pessimistic about it working out. I was totally interested in trying them, but I figured that there would be a possibility that I wouldn’t finish the bag. While I still haven’t finished the bag, I don’t see any reason as to why I won’t. I certainly wouldn’t call these perfect, but they’re creative and they might open the door for more sour, sweet, salty combinations in the gummy world in the future.

The key thing they got right about these is that they didn’t go too overboard with the salty flavour. They also paired the salty flavour with a fairly strong lemon flavour. If you ate these without reading the package, you’d probably just think you got an odd flavoured lemon gummy. When you know that they’re salty you can most certainly taste it. I imagine it might be because of the fact that no one really expects a salty gummy, so odd is the only way you can describe it. I wouldn’t say I love the odd flavour, but it does grow on me as I eat more of them.

The only part of this candy that disappoints, and it’s only a little, is the lemon flavour. It seems very fake and slightly sweet. I wonder how this candy would have improved with a more authentic and tart lemon flavour. Salt and real lemon do work well together, so I’m not sure why they chose to go with the flavour of lemon that tastes more like floor cleaner than real lemon.

These gummies are an experimental step into an interesting new direction. I really hope someone out there finds these and tries to make them a little bit better. I don’t fault the folks at Wischi though, they took a chance with a new flavour idea and it kind of worked.
