This is not a flashy, or particularly pretty looking piece of taffy. I’m not sure how I feel about that either. Part of me likes the idea of having candy come out of the package in fun shapes and colours. I like the idea of candy dazzling me with my eyes as well as my pallet. Another part of me respects the idea of having fewer random chemicals put into my body, even when it’s candy. It’s really a hard decision to make, with such a bright and fun package you expect a bright and fun candy, but I understand why they may have chosen to go the way they did.
As for the candy’s taste and texture, it’s pretty good. The texture is actually excellent, something I’ve started to expect from the fine folks at Swizzels Matlow. They seem to really understand how to make a taffy that’s satisfying to chewy but doesn’t break your jaw. You would think it would be easy, but so many other taffy companies don’t seem to get the balance right. Flavour wise it’s okay, but it does bother me a little. While I enjoyed the flavour, I can’t really place what fruit it’s supposed to be. The package says “tutti-frutti which seems like a bit of a cop-out to me. They give it a generic fruit flavour, then give it a made up fruit name. It’s a scam in the candy world that’s been going on for decades, and I’m not really a big fan.
This is a fine piece of taffy. It’s by no means the best taffy I’ve ever had in my life, but I was happy enough to eat it for this review. I have a few more pieces of this taffy in my cupboard right now, and while I’m in no rush to eat the rest, I will enjoy them sometime later this week.
