There are so many amazing details about this bar, but one part is kind of lacking. I don’t normally focus on details like packaging and even the name of companies, but in this case I really can’t avoid it. There were two reasons I bought this bar, first of all I wanted to buy a high quality chocolate bar from Iceland, secondly the package really caught my attention. The design of this package is a work of art, every layer from the box to the foil wrapper, and even the chocolate itself is a piece of visual art. While opening this bar I was more and more impressed at each level. The name is also fairly clever (I think), my assumption being that the name is based on the popular eating onomatopoeia often used by Cookie Monster when he eats cookies.
Opening this bar was a delight, my only hope was that the chocolate lived up to the hype of all the packaging and design. Unfortunately my general answer to that is that it didn’t. While it wasn’t the worst chocolate I’ve ever eaten, it was disappointing, particularly with all the hype delivered by the package. The first issue I found was apparent before I even took a bite, the colour of the bar. It’s an odd light brown hue, not like milk chocolate, but more like that gold chocolate that’s become trendy lately. I’ll be honest, with “Sea Salt Toffee” being on the package, I was expecting milk or dark chocolate with sea salt and toffee in it.
Instead it seems like it’s a white chocolate that either has very finely ground sea salt and toffee in it, or (and I hope this isn’t true) a white chocolate flavoured like sea salt and toffee. Either way it’s a little disappointing since both toffee and sea salt not only offer their unique flavours, but great textures as well. With the ingredients so blended together everything was kind of lost. I tasted a little toffee and it was a little salty, but none of the flavours offered anything bold and interesting.
The chocolate was also a little waxy for my liking. The bar did eventually melt in my mouth, but my fingers didn’t have that nice chocolate residue that you often get with a high quality chocolate. The first bite kind of felt like wax, and tasted a little of salt and toffee, but not really. Maybe it was a little too difficult for the chocolate to live up to the amazing package design, but I think even in a boring package this chocolate wouldn’t really wow me either.
