Penne Straws "Cinnamon Churro"

Vintage Italia

Poorly made, this snack could have been a disaster, and to be honest I was kind of expecting it. It’s not that I don’t have faith in the makers of this treat, in fact I was surprised that they would make something like this as it has such potential to not work at all. The good news is not only did it work as a snack, but there were several surprises that made it a little more unique than I expected.

The main surprise was the actual design of these crunchy snacks. I was expecting something really light, like the density of a cheese puff. While they are light, there also very crunchy. I would say they’re somewhere between a potato chip and an uncooked piece of pasta. Maybe something close to a deep fried noodle, only the shape of the pasta makes it seem thicker. What I’m saying is these crunchy snacks were very satisfying to crunch. They were dense enough to have a very good crunch.

The other surprise came from the sweet flavour. Actually it was the complete lack of sweet flavour that surprised me. Don’t get me wrong, they’re more sweet than savoury, but I would say just a little bit more sweet than savoury. The cinnamon was the star of the show flavour wise, but there was enough sugar to make sure that the cinnamon didn’t burn or have any bitter taste at all. If you’re looking for a really sweet treat, you might be disappointed, but I really enjoyed the balance of sweet and cinnamon. Best of all, since they’re not really that sweet I could eat more of them without being overwhelmed.

I think the only thing that’s a little bit odd about these is the flavour name. What they’re trying to do is mix the idea that these penne shaped snacks are deep fried, and so are churros, so it must make sense, and it does. The problem is most of the churros I’ve had are also really sweet, and these are not. It’s not a problem, but it makes them a little less like a churro than I expected.
