Pizza Candy "Mango & Grape"

JSB Candy

I’m not sure what I expected when I was handed a hard candy with the words “pizza” on it. What would make this review really easy to write would be if this candy was pizza flavoured. It would likely be horrible, but it would also be unique. Generally horrible and unique make for an easy review to write. What these candies ended up being is a little confusing with an odd aftertaste. The first confusion is just in the idea of them being a pizza themed hard candy. Is this something people want?

The pizza theme, beyond the package is just the fact that each hard candy is a small triangle with little bumps that are supposed to represent pizza toppings. The detail is actually pretty good for a small hard candy. I’m not sure why they chose to theme these hard candies with pizza, but they did a good job.

The next confusing part of these candies is only about the grape flavoured treat. It clearly says grape on the package, however the candy is very blue. I’m not sure if it’s just the colour tricking my mind, but I felt like it was closer to a blueberry flavour as well. It’s funny that if the words on the package don’t match the candy colour or design, it plays tricks on your mind and makes it taste weird. Had you just handed me the blue candy and said nothing, I might have said it was a pretty good blueberry candy. After all, the mango candy was fine, in fact it was a fairly authentic mango flavour.

This is not to say that the flavour was perfect though, there was a weird after taste that I just didn’t understand. It can best be described as slightly salty. This is probably another reason I liked the mango more than the blueberry/grape. Mango actually tastes pretty good with a bit of salt on it, it’s a common way to eat mango in some South East Asian countries. Blueberries or grapes on the other hand don’t seem to work as well with salt. I’m not sure if this salty flavour is intentional, but it kind of ruined both of the candies for me (even the mango as I personally prefer my mango unsalted).

These candies are a little weird, I wouldn’t call them disgusting, but I did finish eating them wondering why certain choices where made.
