Pocky "Nutty Almond Flavour"

Glico

Now what we have here might be a re-branding. I say this because several years ago I tasted a Pocky flavour that called itself Pocky “Almond Taste” and I think this is almost exactly the same. I was hoping it might be a little different because unlike the Almond Taste Pocky, these Nutty Almond Pocky depict what appears to be almond butter on the front of the package, and also have “crispier & tastier” written underneath the part where they claim that it’s a good source of fibre. I normally don’t write reviews based on old reviews, but I think I’ll make an exception in this case.

After going over my old review I learned that the Almond Taste Pocky was original in that it was almond flavoured, but lacked anything to make it really original. It was a fine Pocky, but could have pulled off the almond theme a little bit better. For a brief moment I wondered if the people at Glico may have read my review and made these Nutty Almond Pocky as a response. It’s a pipe dream but I like to use my imagination sometimes. If these are a response to the problems with the Almond Taste Pocky, they really didn’t improve it at all.

I might even go so far as to say that they ruined it a little bit. The almond flavour of these was very weak. There was a hint of almond, but I believe most of it came from the thin layer of almond flavoured chocolate on the outside of the plain cookie sticks. There’s also no sign at all of any kind of almond texture. Much like the Almond Taste Pocky, these Nutty Almond Pocky have ground almonds in the chocolate, but they’re ground so fine that you lose all of the texture.

It’s a shame, I feel like this is their second attempt at an Almond Pocky and once again it doesn’t really impress. Much like the Almond Taste Pocky, these do taste good, and still have the nice balance of cookie to coating. I just don’t really get a lot of Almond from them. I feel like Almond Pocky is not only a great idea, but should be fairly easy to pull off. I’m not sure why this doesn’t work, but I’m willing to try again if the folks at Glico are willing to give it another try.
