Reese Hearts

Reese

One problem that seems to come up over and over again when dealing with classic treats themed to a holiday is shape. I’m not talking about the quality of the design. I’m talking about how shape affects distribution and ratio of ingredients. Most of the time when a classic treat is reshaped for a holiday the entire balance of this treat changes, and most of the time the changes are focused on the new look over the classic taste and texture. This however is the rare exception, in this case it feels like the folks at Reese’s managed to create a treat that both looks like a beautiful chocolate heart, but also retains the taste and texture of their classic Peanut Butter Cup. I didn’t feel like I was being short changed for the sake of these looking like cute little hearts.

It should be mentioned, the design of these is really nice. There’s a nice spotted texture on the face of each heart with some elegant lines surrounding the outside. It’s a simple design for sure, but it looks great and works really well with the foil package. While it’s only a small detail, I also liked that there were two different colours of foil package as well. I know lots of candies come wrapped in different coloured packages, but I just feel like the colour choice here works really well with the design of the chocolates. This was a very visually pleasing treat, and in particular when taken out of the bag I feel like it would make for a fine gift on Valentine’s Day.

These little chocolate hearts not only look good, best most importantly they taste good too. Earlier I said that they really match the original peanut butter cups, and I think this is true, with a slight caveat. The ratio of these might be a little more chocolate than peanut butter. While I think this is likely the case, I like more chocolate to peanut butter in this kind of treat. Having said that, at no point does one element take over from the other. The chocolate and peanut butter are also exactly the same as the quality you would get from Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. When I bit into each one of these hearts, I felt like I was eating a classic peanut butter cup.

If you have a loved one that’s really into Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, I feel like you can’t go wrong with these. The bag isn’t the most elegant thing in the world, but each individual chocolate is actually pretty nice. I would suggest possibly putting a few of these on the side of a nice piece of cake, or maybe if it suites you, using these as a trail to a romantic interlude.
