Sea Salt Caramel

Gertrude Hawk

When I say that I like the sweet and savoury combination I generally mean something like a pretzel or a potato chip covered in chocolate. The folks at Gertrude Hawk have taken the fine combination and mixed it up... a whole lot. The fact is that sea salt and caramel have been around for a while and taste great together. Chocolate on salty foods can be great as well as the salt can improve the flavour of the cocoa. I guess what I'm trying to say in this broken paragraph is that I'm really excited to try this treat.

Wow, now that's a salty taste at first. Since the salt is the easiest part of this treat to dissolve, it really hits you pretty hard on the first part of a bite. As you chew a bit, the salty flavour dies a little and the caramel and chocolate smooth it out a bit. The thing is the salt comes back a bit at the end and leaves a bit of a salty flavour as an aftertaste.

I don't know, maybe it is a little too much salt. It's not that I don't like the idea of the treat; I just don't think that the amount of salt is right. The chocolate and caramel seemed of a decent quality, which is nice because had they been weak at all this treat would have totally sucked. I just think a little less salt would have improved this candy by a lot, and created a better balance between the salty and the sweet.
