I feel like I’ve been tricked, but in the best possible way. When I first read the package I assumed that what I was getting was a bar of dark chocolate that was made with coconut milk. Then after taking my first bite I realized that the bar had dried coconut lightly scattered throughout. The dark chocolate was pretty good, and pretty much what you’d expect from a regular dark chocolate (not made with coconut milk). So then I thought that maybe this was just some kind of odd milk/dark chocolate combination that contained coconut, but after reading the package I realized that I was right the first time. This is actually a bar of coconut milk dark chocolate, however it also has coconut in it as well.
The part that threw me off was the coconut flakes (or maybe strands is a better way to describe them). Honestly, I’m not a huge coconut fan and it’s very rare that I really enjoy a coconut bar. It’s even more rare that I’ll admit that coconut actually improves a bar. This bar is right on the line for me. I will say that the coconut milk dark chocolate is great, it might be some of the best vegan chocolate I’ve ever eaten. The strands of coconut on the bottom of the bar were both surprising (as they’re not mentioned on the front of the package) and I’m not sure you need them. The dark chocolate could probably hold up on its own, but since the coconut strands were minimal and they added a hint of a nice texture, they weren’t that bad.
I’m really not sure how I feel about the added coconut. I didn’t hate it, but I’m not sure that it really improved this bar. If you like coconut and in particular if you’re vegan, you should totally get this bar. The fact that this bar is vegan is only mentioned in small print on the back of the bar, and honestly if I didn’t read the back of the bar I wouldn’t have known it was vegan. Coconut milk really seems to work to make dark chocolate, and the folks at Siamaya really did a great job on this vegan bar.
