I’m a little bit confused about this chocolate bar. I’ve had a treat in the past called a 3 Kaempe Skildpadder, also made by Toms. Everything thing about these two treats is identical, except for the shape. In this case it’s a simple bar, in the case of the 3 Kaempe Skildpadder it’s three round chocolates. The question is then, what shape makes for a better treat. I will say that there is a difference, and it all has to do with one aspect, the ratio of chocolate to caramel filling.
I can only assume that the caramel filling of both of these bars is exactly the same. I can only assume because I’m not eating both of these treats at the same time. The reason there’s any question is that the fillings are very different, or at least the ratio of filling to chocolate is extremely different. In the case of this bar there is a lot more chocolate over filling when you compare it to the 3 Kaempe Skildpadder. The filling is a caramel, but it has an intense flavour. I would describe it as almost alcoholic, although I can’t say if there’s any actual booze in either of these candies (it is Europe and they’re a little more liberal about this kind of thing). I found the caramel 3 Kaempe Skildpadder to be very overpowering, where this bar it’s much more subtle.
The unfortunate part is that the dark chocolate in this bar is okay, but it’s not the best dark chocolate I’ve ever eaten. It could be that the dark chocolate used for the 3 Kaempe Skildpadder is also not great, but I didn’t notice it as much since the caramel took over so much. I would say in North American standards this dark chocolate is great to excellent, but I’ve had some amazing dark chocolates in Europe and this one doesn’t hold a candle to them.
I would by no means suggest to pass on this bar, in fact I would recommend you give it a try. The caramel still has a unique flavour and the chocolate is fine enough. I just found that since the chocolate plays a stronger role in this bar that it doesn’t hold up as well when the caramel plays the lead role. Having said that, the caramel is really intense, and some people might prefer a little less. I guess what I’m saying is, I’d really like to try this intense caramel, with a higher quality dark chocolate.
