I have to be honest; I was a little afraid of these Skittles. With the trend today of having foods that blow your socks off, and my general dislike of spicy foods, I was very worried that these would hurt my mouth a lot. For some reason I dislike my mouth to be in pain, I know it's not the trend today, but it's how I feel. I thought that this might have been a spicy gimmick, and I was worried that Skittles would crank up the heat in an attempt to make these painfully spicy.
I'll say right off the bat, they are spicy, they're not so spicy that I couldn't stand more than just one, however I didn't eat more than a dozen either. The heat hit as soon as I started chewing my first Skittle, and it grew after each Skittle I ate afterwards. It might have plateaued around the sixth Skittle, but by then I was already uncomfortable. Needless to say, if you don't like spicy foods, you will not like these Skittles, each and every flavour is spicy.
Speaking of flavours, this is where I feel like these Skittles kind of failed. There are five flavours of Skittles in each bag, Sizzlin' Strawberry, Fiery Watermelon, Flamin' Orange, Blazin' Mango, and Lemon Spark. I feel like out of the five flavours, only two of them kind of made sense with the spicy theme, mango and lemon. I say mango because in some Asian cultures they will add hot pepper to their fresh mango, and surprisingly it works, the lemon just seems zesty so I figured it would be okay. The orange, and strawberry might work spicy, but the watermelon is most certainly odd. If a candy company is going to make a hot version of their treat, they should use flavours that work with spice. There are plenty of options out there, and I feel like other than the mango, Skittles just took their popular fruit flavours and made them spicy. There's nothing that creatively connects the spicy flavour with the fruity flavour.
The spice of these Skittles is fine, those that like a little heat will enjoy it. The fruity flavours are also fine, those that like Skittles will enjoy it. The two of them together seems a little weird.
