Sometimes I think that I expect too much out of candy. I feel like in recent years my expectations of what I want to get out of some candies far exceeds what I actually get. I thought that this was the fault of the candy companies, but lately I’ve started to wonder if maybe it’s me that’s just expecting too much. That was until I ate these Littl’ Bits. The package on this candy confused me a little bit, but what was delivered far exceeded what I could possibly expect.
The confusion comes from the extremely long name of this candy, “Milk Caramel Sea Salt & Biscuit Mix”. The key word here that I didn’t really think about, but plays a crucial role is the word “mix”. That is to say that this bag contains more than one kind of Littl’ Bit, it actually has two. There are the caramel sea salt bits and the biscuit bits. I assume that the milk part is describing the fact that these are covered in milk chocolate. What you’re getting is two kinds of bits both with unique textures and flavours. The biscuit bits are pretty simple yet satisfying. I would say that the best part of the biscuit bits is the very satisfying crunch, but the flavour is fine enough. The caramel bits are a little more confusing since they’re hard, so I would describe them as more of a sea salt toffee than a caramel. The flavour and texture of these is spot on, both a little salty and a nice burnt toffee flavour, with a satisfying crunch.
The chocolate on the outside of both of these types of bits is wonderful, something that all Tony’s Chocolonely products seem to have. It melts in your mouth perfectly and the cocoa flavour is just perfect to balance with the toffee and biscuit flavours. Another fun fact I learned is there doesn’t seem to be any way of knowing if you’re getting a biscuit bit or a caramel/toffee bit. There are a few different sizes of bits in the bags, but size does not correlate to what might be inside. At first I found this frustrating, particularly when I was trying to get a photo of both a biscuit interior and a caramel interior, but after eating a few handfuls I started to appreciate that you couldn’t tell what you were eating.
Each handful of these Littl’ Bits was a wonderful surprise, and while I never knew what I was going to get, I was always happy with what I got. The folks at Tony’s Chocolonely really delivered on what they promised, even though it was a little more complicated. I felt like they wanted me to have a very particular experience, and made sure it was just right.
