This bar leaves me with many questions. Right off the bat, the name is a little weird. I feel like if you have a company called “United”, it might not be a good idea to name a candy bar after your company. It’s not that united is a bad name for a corporation, it’s just not a fun name for a candy bar. When you put it with the word “Woody” it’s even more strange and confusing (not in a good way). It’s also reinforced with the fact that each square is stamped with the word “united”. I know that it’s the name of the company, but again it’s the least fun part of the name of this bar.
The second question I have is about the theme of the bar. It’s not made totally clear on the package, but if you look closely you’ll see a couple of cookie sticks (like Pocky) near the pink chocolate bar. Each bar is filled with what appears to be broken cookie stick bits. My opinion on this is that one of the most important feature of cookie stick treats is the fact that they’re sticks. If you break them into bits, you’re kind of missing the whole point of the sticks. It feels like the folks at United tried to make Pocky like treats, but all their sticks kept breaking, so they just went with bars instead. The other problem is that there just isn’t enough of these cookie bits in the chocolate bar, so really all you have is a slightly gritty candy bar.
The final problem with this bar is one that’s very common, and that’s a lack of quality with the chocolate. Flavoured chocolates are really hard to pull off well. More often than not I find that flavoured chocolates just taste cheap. This chocolate not only has that problem, but I feel like the chocolate might actually be of slightly lower quality. Even the strawberry flavour was kind of weak.
This bar really fascinated me, I’m not sure I expected it to be great, but I knew the concept was a little different. I’m not entirely convinced that anyone could pull this concept off, but it doesn’t help having substandard ingredients.
