As sugar free alternative, these caramels work very well. If you just took a bite and didn’t look at the package (particularly the myriad of odd sugar substitutes listed in the ingredients) then you might think you’re getting a fairly average caramel. You probably wouldn’t be able to guess that these are sugar free. You also probably wouldn’t say that these caramels are that remarkable either. They’re not bad by any stretch, but they’re not that amazing either.
One thing that Werther’s candy has over many other caramel flavoured/based treats is how smooth and creamy they are. The name of these treats says the are “chewy caramels” and they are. The problem is that below that the package says that they’re “rich, smooth and creamy”, and I don’t agree with that, at least when you compare them to other Werther’s treats. Werther’s has a reputation for being super smooth and very creamy, these are just caramel. I would say that these feel closer to a caramel flavoured taffy than a classic creamy caramel.
While I can’t say these rank on my list of best caramels ever, they easily land on my list as some of the best sugar free treats I’ve had. They taste pretty good, and I think after a while of just eating these, you’d never miss regular caramels. While they’re not a new superstar in the candy world, they fit the brief described on the package. If given the choice between these and a regular Werther’s Chewy Caramel I wouldn’t choose these, but the fact that they’re sugar free is amazing.
