It’s an odd theme for a gummy candy, but I admire the fact that they went someplace weird. I highly doubt that any kid anywhere has ever suggested that they wanted a gummy version of a Korean barbecue. It’s very weird, but it’s also weird enough that some kids might find the strangeness of it to be attractive. It was weird enough that I thought I’d give it a try, knowing that the chances of it being something completely unique was very low. Sometimes a little gimmick will sell more candy, but it rarely sells a candy twice.
I’d probably stay on that theme, while this is an okay gummy treat I can’t see this being anyone’s favourite gummy. I would imagine that most people would buy this once to check out the weird theme, but never feel the urge to buy it again. The main reason is that while the gummies are tasty enough there’s nothing really special about them other than the theme. They did a fine job with the shapes of the gummies giving you a slice of meat, a shrimp, a fried egg and what appears to be some bok choy. The flavours however are just some kind of generic fruit flavour, and most of them are kind of similar. While I didn’t expect them to taste like real Korean barbecue, it would have been nice if the flavours were a little different from each other.
The shape is really the star of this show, but it could have done better. If I’m to be a stickler, I think it would have been nice if the shapes were to scale with each other. As it stands with this, the shrimp is huge while the bocchoy and fried eggs are fairly to scale with each other. The meat seems a little big, unless it’s supposed to be a full steak. They all look great, but the scale could be improved.
I should also mention a little about the texture. Two of the gummies are pretty generic texture wise, but the egg and shrimp are a little different. The shrimp is a little softer than the bok choy and the meat, and the egg is super soft compared to all of them. I like the texture of the egg as it simulates the soft egg compared to the rest of the food really well. This is an okay gummy treat, and if you love Korean barbecue it might be a fun little snack to have for fun, but I’m pretty sure it won’t ever be your favourite candy.
