Yupi Puzzle

PT Yupi Indo Jelly Gum

This treat had two ways that it could have been great, but I think it kind of failed in both. The first way it could have been great would be to be a great gummy candy. This is the part that I can’t totally complain about, but it’s also nothing that special. Each different coloured puzzle piece does have its own unique fruit flavour, but also a stronger general fruit flavour. It took me several attempts to be sure that there was a difference, and it wasn’t until the last few pieces that I was fairly certain there was a hint of difference with each colour. I also really couldn’t make out what flavour each colour was supposed to be.

The second way this treat could have been great was in how well it performs as a puzzle. If you think about it as a traditional puzzle that one would solve, it completely fails. You basically get a random selection of gummies shaped like puzzle pieces. There is no design on them, and from what we could tell no actual way to put it together. Allison (who is our household puzzle expert) made an attempt to figure it out. While she did make a fun design with some very creative choices, there’s no way of knowing if it’s right.

I’m sure if I confronted the creators of this treat with the fact that the pieces don’t actually make anything, they would probably tell me that the point is to let people build something creative, rather than solving a puzzle. Allison did achieve that, but I don’t really think that’s how most puzzles work. There’s also very limited choices in the different styles of puzzle pieces, there’s one shape for the corner pieces, one shape for the edge pieces and one shape for the middle pieces. We also only got 3 corner pieces, and no way to make it a triangle.

While I like the idea of making a puzzle themed gummy treat (I’ve never seen one before), I feel like it might have been better to make one that actually had some kind of puzzle to it.
