It’s weird, I can’t ever remember actually eating this candy bar before. It’s not uncommon for me to eat candy that I’ve never tasted before for this site, but it’s not that common for it to be a well known treat available almost everywhere in North America. It’s even a treat that I’m pretty sure I’ve contemplated buying before, but after eating it I’m pretty sure I’ve never actually pulled the trigger and bought it. It’s not without reason though, first of all I was convinced that the Zero bar was just a long bar of milk chocolate that tasted better frozen, which is to say I confused it with another treat. Secondly it’s a bar that’s wrapped up in a lot of hate, I feel like there are many people out there who really dislike this bar. I can’t say that I love this bar, but I would call it a little weird rather than claiming to hate it.
The weirdest thing about this bar is the white coating. Notice I didn’t use the words “white chocolate” to describe the coating. I would instead describe the coating as being more like the yogourt coating you sometimes find on peanuts and raisins. Unfortunately the coating really isn’t that thick, so I wasn’t able to get an idea of exactly what it’s made up of, but it certainly was different than your average white chocolate coating. How you feel about that depends greatly on how much you like white chocolate. The fillings are also a little weird, other than the caramel. The caramel is a simple strip of caramel that tastes fine. The nougat is okay as well, but apparently it’s supposed to be an almond nougat, which I didn’t really get. To make things even weirder, they’ve paired an almond nougat with peanuts. I guess that might work, but frankly I had a hard time finding many nuts in this bar at all. I feel like I found a few peanuts, but I certainly didn’t get one in every bite. As for any real almonds, I didn’t even realize it was part of this bar till I read the fine print on the package afterwards.
This is one of those weird times where I ate a very unique candy bar, but it didn’t really work. Most of the time I’m so happy to try something new that I feel like I ignore the idea of it working or not. With this bar it’s kind of glaring and I couldn’t ignore the fact that it was just lacking nuts and the combinations felt a weird. I certainly wouldn’t say that you should never try a Zero bar, and I certainly feel like this bar doesn’t deserve to be hated. I’m just not sure I would call this bar great either. It’s very weird, yet it contains ingredients that are not weird at all.
