Chicken skin is something I’ve only recently discovered. It’s not that I didn’t know that chickens had skin, or that eating the skin of some fried chicken can be really tasty. It’s only been recently that I’ve discovered that some people deep fry the skins on their own and turn them into a delicious snack similar to chips. I’m sure it’s not for everyone, but I ended up liking deep fried chicken skin snacks a lot more than I thought I would.
The thing about chicken skin is that you rarely see it available on the mass market. In my experience all of the deep fried chicken skin I’ve seen is either sold as street food, or at the very least as small batch treats in some local South East Asia stores. It’s just not a treat that the big snack producers seem to be trying to make. I’m not sure if it’s hard to make chicken skins on a large scale, or if there’s just not enough demand. This bag of salty chips is the closest I’ve ever seen any snack company come to making chicken skins.
The problem with this snack is that it’s not really chicken skins at all, on many levels. First of all if you read the fine print you’ll see that they are in fact “crackling chips with chicken skin flavor”. However, the biggest problem is they don’t even really taste like chicken skins either. To me chicken skins have a bit of a flavour like KFC chicken, with plenty of herbs and spices to enhance the chicken skin flavour. These chips on the other hand were very bland. I didn’t even get any kind of chicken flavour off of them at all, just salt.
They weren’t horrible, but they were kind of boring. They weren’t shaped like chicken skin, they were in fact squares. It just seems like they made a salty snack and thought people might buy them if you put chicken skin on the package. This is weird because to my knowledge this isn’t a trendy food.
