I’m always skeptical when a snack companies claim to make a pizza flavoured treat, yet these crunchy squares taste exactly like pizza. I think I’m skeptical because pizza can be a lot of things really. You can change the sauce, toppings and even the cheese and it can still technically be a pizza. While these don’t taste like every single pizza I’ve ever tasted, they do taste like the classic pizza you get with pepperoni, peppers and tomato sauce. If you were to hand me one of these crunchy squares and not tell me what flavour they were I probably still would have said pizza.
The one part that is missing (and is oddly my favourite part of a pizza) is the cheese. It’s probably the biggest fault of these squares as it seems like something that could be done. I’ve eaten cheese flavoured potato chips and even had real cheese on some snacks. It’s really weird because even though it’s missing an important ingredient, it still tastes just like pizza. That makes me wonder what makes a pizza a pizza, how important each element actually is.
I should also mention that the crunchy (corn?) squares work really well at filling in for the dough. Texture wise they might be a little too crunchy, but flavour wise it works well with the seasoning. They were also fairly satisfying to crunch, and would probably work with many other toppings as well.
I enjoyed eating these squares, and I was ready to give a rant about how they can’t really give you pizza without many of the ingredients, yet I really got a pizza vibe from this snack. So while it wasn’t perfect, it made me think a lot about pizza flavours in a really positive way. Also for all of you out there who want to complain that pizza should be in slices (triangles) and not squares, I didn’t mind since squares is how I used to get pizza at my school cafeteria.
