In the past I’ve discussed what flavour rainbow might be, but this bag of chips has me more curious about this question than ever before. While I’ve had a few sweet treats with a rainbow theme, I’ve never seen a salty snack with this colourful concept. I had two initial reactions when I saw this bag, the first was that it might just be a plain bag of chips with a rainbow package. The second was more hopeful, that it might be a bag of multicoloured potato chips with a range of colourful spices and toppings. Since the only word on the package I could make sense of was rainbow, I really wasn’t sure where this was going.
After opening the bag my dreams of these being an assortment of colours was dashed immediately. These are simply plain looking potato chips, there’s not even a hint of colour on any of them. Flavour wise is where this gets a little more complicated. I wouldn’t describe them as flavourful, but I would say that there’s a hint of flavour on these chips. I would describe the flavour as sweet with a hint of fish. After flipping the bag over (honestly I didn’t look at the bag until after I ate a few chips), I realized that there are an assortment of sea creatures depicted on the bag. My guess is that this is a chip based on some kind of seafood dish that contains various sea creatures and has a fairly sweet sauce.
While I have nothing against the idea of a seafood based potato chip, the question remains about why these are rainbow themed. My first guess is that it’s just a marketing tactic. Maybe something to do with Pride month, or maybe just jumping on the popularity of rainbow things now a days. My second guess is that maybe the seafood dish that it’s trying to represent has a colourful (or even rainbow) name. While I do know a little about Asian cooking, I’m not aware of any rainbow themed seafood dish, having said that, I don’t normally order seafood so it’s possible I’ve just never heard of it.
