I’m really wondering if my tolerance for spicy food has gone up a lot. In the past I would have described my tolerance as zero. In fact, I have a vivid memory of going out for Thai food with some friends at a restaurant where you could choose the heat level of your food by adding little flames to your order. Most people went for 3 or 4 flames, the heat lovers would go around 6 or 7 even up to ten. There was a story of a person who once went to 30 and suffered so much he took the rest of the day off. I on the other hand went for one flame. After a few bites the people around me saw my reaction and suggested that maybe next time I just stick to zero flames. This is all to say that in the past I would describe my tolerance of spicy foods to be nonexistent.
The thing is, lately either I’ve started to build a tolerance, or spicy food has started to become less spicy. These Doritos are the perfect example of just this. I was expecting to have a few chips and then have to tap out, but I ate the whole bag. My mouth burned a little while eating them and even when I was finished, but it wasn’t that bad. As far as anyone reading this review, I guess it means that I need your help, let me know if you’ve tasted these and how hot they actually are. Am I getting better, or are these just really weak chips when it comes to heat.
One benefit to spicy not being spicy anymore (either because I’m tougher or they’ve dialed down the spice) is that I’ve started to appreciate the flavours that come with spicy foods more. This is again a great example of just that. When you first bite into this chip there’s an almost sour flavour, but it’s brief. Soon the flavour goes a little sweet and quickly mellows to an almost cheese like flavour. It’s a great combination of flavours, each balanced by the last. After a few chips the flavours do mix up a bit, but every so often you can really pick one out.
I liked these Doritos a lot more than I thought I would. I don’t think they’re my favourite, or even second favourite flavour of Doritos, but I’d most certainly buy them again.
