I think the first question anyone would have about these crispy treats is what does a cheeseburger have to do with ghosts or Halloween. Honestly I’ve given it a lot of thought and I have no idea. I’m not sure, but it might be one of the weirder flavour/theme combination I’ve ever seen in the salty snack world. I’ve seen some gummies that have strange combinations of flavour and design, but salty snacks don’t often have heavy theming like these ghosts, so the fact that they’re hamburger flavoured is just weird. The only classic savoury snack flavour that I think would work with the ghost theme would be ghost pepper. In that respect, while weird, I do much prefer eating a cheese burger flavour ghost over super spicy ghost.
The shape of these ghosts is actually kind of cute. They don’t have arms really, and they’re a little bit squat, it’s almost as if they’re severed ghost heads. In some ways that makes them even creepier. However I will say that as a design it works, and if you didn’t tell what they were supposed to be, I might have guessed ghosts. It also helps that they’re white.
Flavour wise these are a little less successful. The biggest problem I have with hamburger and cheeseburger snacks is the fact that hamburgers and cheeseburgers often have a lot of different ingredients. There’s the patty and the cheese, but there’s also the bun, maybe a pickle, and possibly mustard and ketchup too. Some burgers also come with things like lettuce, onions and tomatoes as well. The problem is that it’s hard to get all of those flavours into one snack and not over complicate the flavour. The folks at Mad decided that the didn’t have to go that direction, instead they seemed to go with cheese, and a hint of a meat flavour. Honestly if you just gave me these without telling me what flavour they were, I might have guessed a smoked cheese, as opposed to a cheeseburger.
Fortunately the cheese flavour is okay, and the design is kind of fun. While they feel pretty processed, the crunch isn’t bad either. It was a pleasant snack with a ghostly shape. Seeing as these come from Tunisia, I’m not sure that they’re actually Halloween themed, but I figure they would work in a pinch.
