In the entire time that I’ve been reviewing candy (more years than I care to count), I’ve never come across a package that ruined the treat so much. There is not much I can say negatively about the actual elements of this treat, however the package design made it frustrating and even affected the flavour. I normally try not to discuss packaging that much when I review treats, but this review is going to focus on it.
On paper, the basic concept of this treat is fine, it’s an egg shaped dish of chocolate, milky cream, and rice crisps that comes with a small spoon like utensil hidden on the back. The spoon like utensil, was the first issue. First of all it’s made of cardboard, which I can understand if you wanted to make it more environmentally conscious, but the problem is that by the time I finished the treat, my spoon was floppy and I could taste particles of cardboard. The compartment on the back that held the spoon took up valuable chocolate space, and also created an odd shape to the bottom of the candy making it harder to scoop out with the weird cardboard spoon.
While the spoon was an issue the biggest problem with this package is how thin it is (made worse by the fact that the spoon takes up some of this very little space). What happened is that large rice crisps took up so much of the room, that there was barely any room for the chocolate and milk cream. Both the milk cream and the chocolate were such thin layers that the ratios just didn’t work. I felt like you really lost the unique flavours of each of these layers. For this treat to be really fun, it needs to be at least double the thickness.
It’s interesting because I really enjoyed the milky cream and chocolate, and really enjoyed the texture the rice crisps gave them both. If it wasn’t for this crappy package my biggest complaint would have been the fact that the spoon was made of paper and didn’t hold up. I probably would have excused that and given them some praise for thinking about the environment. Unfortunately the package was just too thin, and the scoop compartment made scraping the bottom a frustrating ordeal.
